With over five million confirmed cases and close to four hundred thousand deaths across the world, the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has threatened the entire world on a historic scale.
While the early transmission affected China, South Korea, much of western Europe, and the United States, the virus is currently spreading rapidly across the African continent. Nigeria has recorded close to seven thousand cases as at the time of filing this report.
Due to biological nature of the novel coronavirus, named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) with faster spreading and unknown transmission pattern, it is difficult to contain the transmission of the disease globally.
The pandemic presents a major threat to already-stressed or makeshift health systems. But technology could help curb the spread.
The World Health Organisation (WHO, has recommended that washing of one’s hands with soap regularly and thoroughly and/or using alcohol based sanitizer remain major steps toward containing the spread of the virus.
This particular recommendation has led to innovations; from robots to a virus-killing snood and a portable isolation capsule, these new prototypes demonstrate what humans are capable of in the face of adversity.
To this end, the engineering team of the prestigious Institute of Management and Technology, IMT Enugu, embarked on innovation expedition.
IMT is notable as a top institution with a drive to effect positive academic, technological and socioeconomic changes in Nigeria.
The engineering team has delivered a Touch-Free Automated Hand Washing Machine.
A prototype of the machine was unveiled by the Rector, Professor Austin Uchechukwu Nweze and supported by the Deputy Rector, Engr. Sunday Udeh; the School Registrar, Drs. Mrs Ijeoma Aneke; the Deputy Director Degree Programmes, Dr. Mrs. Ogochukwu Okanya and Director Consultancy Unit, Surveyor Oliver Odenigo.
The Public Relations Officer of IMT Enugu, Barr. Mark Akunna Eze, told TechEconomy.ng that while unveiling the automated machine, the Rector expressed delight over the innovative prowess of the engineering team.
“In fact, IMT has recorded many firsts since the assumption of office oo Prof. Nweze. It is not surprising that the team came up with such novel idea and turned it to practical solution to curtailing the spread of COVID-19.
“Interestingly, the Rector has disclosed that management will support mass production of the machines. They will be deployed within the campus and interested members of the public can also place order. One thing is certain, IMT Enugu is now notable for entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs are known during crisis like the world is faced with today”, he added.
As it stands, the group has the Institute’s backing for mass production of the automated machines for sale in the open market.
